4 capped Liberty obverse dies were used on the various Standard Silver half dollars of this year. Obverse 1 This obverse shows the tip of the cap under the "E" in "States" as on 1869 and has the word "Liberty" incused on the ribbon. It was used on J939/P1066. Obverse 2 This obverse shows the tip of the cap under the "S" in "States" and also has the word "Liberty" incused on the ribbon. It was used on J939/P1052 and J963/P1059. Obverse 3 This obverse shows the tip of the cap under the "S" in "States" and has the word "Liberty" raised on the ribbon. It was used on J945/P1073 and J969/P1080. Note: There is a similar obverse to this from 1969 that was used on J742A/P830 with the tip of the cap under the "E" in "States". It is not known if this obverse was used on any 1870 patterns. Obverse 4 This obverse shows the tip of the cap under the "E" in "States" and also has the word "Liberty" raised on the ribbon. It also has William Barber's initial "B" in an open area above the "L" in Liberty as can be seen on the image above and the enlargement below. This is the original die of 1869.
