James B. Longacre's seated liberty design with stars combined with the regular reverse die. It was executed by William Barber as Longacre had died in 1869. It is one of 4 design types produced this year.
Sets were produced in silver (over 1/2 dozen), copper (over 1/2 dozen) and aluminum (only 2) and included the half dime J1068/P1204, dime J1084/P1220, quarter J1099/P1235, half dollar J1114/P1250 and dollar either J1138A/P1276 or J1145/P1287 as illustrated below with all of the coins struck in aluminum.
Some dollars were produced with plain edges. Original sets in any metal are extremely rare. The Garrett silver set which included a plain edged dollar was sold piecemeal in Stacks 3/76 and Bowers & Ruddy's Garrett II sales.
