In this year, the Mint began testing of a uniformly designed minor set struck in nickel containing the cent J605/P670, 3 cent J615/P680 and 5 cent J624/P693 as illustrated below courtesy of PCGS.
Sets were sold to collectors for $9. Its earliest sales occurrence was Mason & Co's 10/1869 J. C. Randall sale.
This is the rarer of the 2 sets with only 2 or 3 dozen believed struck in nickel and a half dozen in copper. To view the other set, click here.
