George T. Morgan's famous Liberty Head design previously believed to have been modeled after Anna Williams. Research by Robert W. Julian notes that this is actually the first of the 4 Morgan dies of this year.
The reverse, showing a 7 sided shield was in the works by February 1877 when Morgan sent pencil sketches to Mint director Henry Linderman. To view those sketches, click here.
Only 3 or 4 examples are known as follows: To see images of all of these, click here.
1) Lohr?, Merkin 9/67, Krouner-Coronet Coin FPL, Champa-B/R 5/72, Bass-HWBRF, B/M 5/99, K. Goldman, Simpson-Heritage 11/20 – PCGS67BN
2) Superior 10/92, B/M 3/96, Heritage 5/97 FPL - PCGS65RB
3) Maris 6/1886, Garrett-JHU, Stacks 3/76 ?, Evans-B/M 8/98, Simpson-Heritage 5/22 – PCGS67RB, illustrated above - medallic die alignment
4) Farouk-Sothebys 2/54, Bolender 10/55?, Bass-HWBRF – condition not reported – this coin is no longer in the HWBRF or else this is an error in Pollock – same as #2?
The Lohr and Farouk-Sothebys 2/54, Bolender 10/55 pedigrees may be reversed or may belong to only one coin. Woodin owned at least 2-duplicate sold in Adams 2/11 sale.
This design was also struck in silver J1522/P1686 with only 2 known.
