The popular Liberty head design without stars. This is one of the first attempts to create a smaller copper cent.
The reverse shows 2 leaves under the "E" in "States". These are difficult to find with much red color.
Examples were struck as follows:
Copper and bronze J160 & J161/P187 as both originals and later restikes. Mark van Winkle of Heritage supplied the following image showing die rust (raised dots in the field) on some obvious later strikings.
Oroide J162/P188. Metallurgical analysis is recommended if one suspects that they have an oroide example.
